Taijiquan
(Tai Chi Chuan), “grand ultimate fist,” is an internal
martial arts style characterized by smooth, flowing
movements that strengthen internal organs as well as the
musculoskeletal system. Taijiquan is moving meditation,
promoting awareness through emphasis on posture and
movement.
A popular image of Taijiquan is crowds of elderly practicing
at parks in the early morning. Taijiquan’s health benefits
are certainly beneficial to the elderly. However, it is
excellent for people of all ages and can be tailored to an
individual’s physical-athletic abilities and aspirations.
Taijiquan training focuses on isometric training (slow burn
from static or relatively static postures) utilizing the
body’s own weight through smooth, slow movements to
strengthen muscles, tendons, and ligaments as well as
increase their flexibility. There are few rivals to
Taijiquan when it comes to strengthening the lower body and
increasing general physical fitness without taxing stress to
the body and risking injuries associated with other forms of
exercise.
Taiji One
teaches the two most apparently extreme styles of Taijiquan:
the most restorative and smooth Yang style and the most
martial and dynamic Chen style as well. The Taiji One
approach is unique: an integration of our experience in Tae
Kwon Do and other styles of martial arts into traditional
Taijiquan training methods. We have been teaching students
with different levels of experience in various martial arts
styles, from nil to Masters, bringing the best out of each
individual. The common theme for success is to come with
“an empty cup.”
Our emphasis is on improving/enhancing mental-physical
balance, posture, flexibility, and strength. From our Yoga
training, we also focus on minimizing injuries in order to
maximize progress.
We are excited to teach and share our passion for Taiji with
fellow students of Grandmaster Coles and a newbie to martial
arts alike. We look forward to seeing you in Taiji class at
CMAA!
About The
Instructors
Mr. Mickey Lee
and Dr. Melody Lee are students of Grandmaster Coles
and members of the 1997 Inaugural Black Belt Class under GM
Coles at BMAA. We are proud to be his students because GM
Coles instilled in us strong foundations in the martial arts
by developing strong basics which helped us when we later
studied Iyengar Yoga, Southern Style Hung Fut Kung Fu, Yang
and Chen Styles of Taiji. GM Coles is the one who inspired
us to teach because he is the most charismatic and inspiring
teacher we have had in the classroom—martial arts or
academic.
